Crisis Receiving Stabilization Center

Opening in January 2027

A safe place to go, 24 hours a day

The Crisis Receiving Stabilization Center gives adults 18 and older in mental health, substance use, or co-occurring crises immediate, calm care outside the emergency room. Center For Family Services runs the center in Denville, with funding from the New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Mental Health and Addictions. Someone to call. Someone to respond. Somewhere safe to go. The center is the "somewhere safe to go" in New Jersey's 988 crisis system.

Who can receive care and how to get car

  • Who: adults 18 and older in mental health, substance use or emotional crisis.
  • When: open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • How to arrive: walk in on your own or with family; get a referral from 988, a mobile crisis team, a community provider; or be brought in by police or other emergency providers. No appointment or referral is required.
  • Cost: no one is turned away because of insurance or ability to pay.

What happens during a visit

1. Welcome: a calm, comfortable space designed to help people feel safe and supported.
2. Assess: the care team evaluates mental health, substance use and immediate safety needs.
3. Stabilize: short-term care, usually less than 24 hours, to ease the crisis.
4. Connect: a warm handoff to ongoing treatment, recovery support and community services, with follow-up after the person leaves.

Why it matters

Right care, right place: people in crisis get help without waiting hours in an emergency room or entering the justice system.
Relief for hospitals and first responders: law enforcement can bring people here and get back on the road quickly, and emergency rooms keep beds free for medical emergencies.
Built for Community Needs: the center is designed to serve thousands of residents each year and links to local providers, hospitals and law enforcement partners.

Get involved: refer someone in crisis, invite us to train your team, or invest in follow-up care, transportation and peer support.
