EnlightenMENT (NJ Peer2Peer Mentoring Program)

The EnlightenMENT program provides supportive mentoring services for youth and young adults ages 14 to 21 who are involved with the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCP&P). The program connects participants with trained Peer Navigators who provide guidance, support, and encouragement based on lived experience and specialized training.

Through individualized mentoring relationships, young people receive support as they work toward personal goals, build self-advocacy skills, strengthen connections to community resources, and prepare for greater independence.

Peer Navigators work alongside youth to:

  • Identify and work toward personal, educational, and life goals
  • Build confidence and self-advocacy skills
  • Strengthen communication with professionals and service providers
  • Increase connections to community resources and supports
  • Develop skills for independence and long-term success
  • Navigate challenges related to foster care and child welfare involvement

Each participant is thoughtfully matched with a Peer Navigator based on individual interests, goals, availability, and background.

Services are flexible and individualized to meet each young person's needs. Youth typically participate in the program for approximately one year, although services may be extended based on progress and ongoing goals. Peer Navigators generally connect with youth at least twice each month, with more frequent contact available when needed. Most meetings occur within the community.

Eligibility 

The program serves youth and young adults ages 14 through 21 who are in the care or custody of DCP&P. Eligible participants include:

  • Youth ages 14-17 who reside in an out-of-home DCP&P placement
  • Young adults ages 18-21 who have voluntarily agreed to receive adolescent services through DCP&P
  • Young adults attending college, living independently, living with roommates, and/or receiving an Independent Living Stipend through DCP&P

Priority is given to youth who have been in placement for 18 months or less. Participants must remain open with DCP&P while receiving services.

 

Referral Information 

Referrals are coordinated through DCP&P. Recommendations may come from other members of a youth's support team, including resource parents, law guardians, CASA representatives, care management organizations, and self-referrals; however, referral submission must be completed by DCP&P staff.
