The Intercultural Competency Committee works to bring a wide variety of trainings to our team.
The resources are included below for your reference.
Understanding the Culture of Poverty
Description: The culture of poverty is a concept embedded in social theory that explains the cycle of poverty. Although the title of this training points to urban settings, the culture of poverty is based on the concept that the economically disadvantaged possess unique value systems that shape characteristics, behaviors and attitudes of individuals and families regardless of geographic location. Poverty, coupled with disparities associated with mental health and substance abuse treatment, can create great challenges for individuals, families, and communities. This training provides participants with a conceptual framework for understanding poverty to enhance knowledge, skills, and best-practices for working with impoverished populations.
The Race to Social Justice
Description: This 2-hour recorded training provides participants with concrete definitions, concepts, and theories to better understand how systemic racism and injustice in our society impact organizations, employees, communities, and families served by your agency. More specifically, during this training, a comprehensive overview of Critical Race Theory’s 5 Tenets will be used as the foundation for increasing awareness and enhancing knowledge around privilege and oppression in America. In addition, participants will identify (7) Everyday Microaggressions and their impact on building cross-cultural relationships. Small group and large open forum discussions will provide an opportunity for participants to engage in “crucial” conversations to better understand race relationships in America and develop strategies to promote a workplace environment that is grounded in principles of equality, equity, and inclusion.
