Summer is a great time for fun in the sun, but it is also an important time for learning.
Many students lose academic ground over the summer, known as the summer slide, starting the school year in September behind where they were in June. This is especially true in the areas of math and reading.
Recognizing the importance of summer programs and the opportunity to offer structured ways for children to learn and grow, Camden Promise Neighborhood supports two fully-enrolled summer programs.
Students at KIPP Cooper Norcross Academy are offered academic support and enrichment programming, including sports, arts, and STEM. Breakfast, lunch, and a healthy snack are offered every day.
The summer program for students at U.S. Wiggins College Preparatory Lab Family School is offered in partnership with the YMCA of Greater Philadelphia. The program includes academic support as well as enrichment programming in the areas of physical activity, STEM, creative arts, literacy, and field trips. Free lunch, snack and dinner are provided daily.
Students who have participated in these programs in past summers have demonstrated continued academic growth and started the next school year ahead of where they ended in June. The Camden Promise Neighborhood Team is proud to offer these safe and structured environments for children to grow and learn over the summer.
