Healthy Habits: The Importance of Nutrition and Wellness in Early Childhood
The preschool years are a time of rapid growth and development, not just physically, but also mentally, emotionally, and socially. What children eat, how active they are, and the healthy habits they begin to develop during this stage lay the foundation for a lifetime of well-being. It’s essential that these healthy habits are supported both at home and in school.
At Mosaic Early Learning, nutrition is a core part of our early learning program. Children receive a nutritious breakfast, lunch, and snack each day, served family-style to encourage conversation, cooperation, and positive attitudes around food. This mealtime experience helps children develop social-emotional skills and learn about healthy eating in a warm, supportive setting.
Regular physical activity is also an essential part of the daily routine. Children participate in at least 60 minutes of structured and unstructured physical activity each day to support motor development, encourage active play, introduce new play concepts, encourage sharing and promote lifelong habits of movement and wellness.
Nutrition and wellness at Mosaic Early Learning are far more than just daily routines—they are fundamental to how we support each child’s ability to learn, thrive, and grow. Our work is guided by the Healthy Head Start Wellness Policy, a comprehensive commitment to creating a school environment that protects and promotes every child’s health and overall well-being. Importantly, this approach extends beyond the classroom. Families are vital partners in our mission. Parents are encouraged to participate in meal planning, cooking activities, and nutrition workshops, helping to carry healthy habits from the classroom into the home. By building these connections, we create a strong, supportive community centered around children’s wellness.
At Mosaic Early Learning, we are committed to giving children a healthy head start—one that helps ensure they’re not only ready to learn today but also prepared for a lifetime of health and success. Support and resources to continue this practice at home are available to all families.
