Motivated by Dr. King's vision of the "Beloved Community," Rutgers–Camden seeks to create on our campus a space where people from all backgrounds can work and learn together. Activities are open to students, alumni, faculty, and staff of the university; their families; and children and adults from across the city of Camden and the state of New Jersey. While we sometimes think of service as one group of people serving another, this day of service involves individuals serving each other and the larger community.
Schedule for the Day:
8 a.m. - Registration begins, breakfast provided
8:45 a.m. - Welcome and program start
9 a.m. - Volunteers leave for off-campus opportunities via buses (provided)
9:45 a.m. - Projects begin
12:30 p.m. - Project wrap-up, volunteers begin boarding buses
1 p.m. - Volunteers return to campus
Project Descriptions
The Day of Service aims to engage adults and youth from the city and the region. In some cases, adult volunteers will help facilitate activities for youth. In other cases, adults will engage in activities that aim to benefit the whole community.
Center for Environmental Transformation: volunteers will work in the community gardens and greenhouse at CFET’s location, as well as join a walking tour of the neighborhood with their board president.
Salvation Army Kroc Center: volunteers will hand out food, clothes, and extreme weather tips to people in need at the Walter Rand Transportation Center.
Neighborhood Center: volunteers will have the opportunity for a number of service projects including food pantry sorting and distribution, community kitchen support, building improvements of the center, and work in their community gardens.
TeenSHARP: will provide volunteers with an on-campus opportunity to work with high-achieving, underrepresented youth on college access projects, as TeenSHARP youth are tasked with creating college access initiatives in their schools and districts
Rutgers Law School “Ask a Lawyer”: Rutgers Law alumni will provide brief and concise legal advice throughout the day during this event that is open to all participants and community members
Marathon Reading of Letter from Birmingham Jail: Dr. Keith Green (associate professor, English) will facilitate a marathon reading of Martin Luther King’s Letters from Birmingham Jail for those interested in a more performance-art type of event
Cooper Grant Neighborhood Association: This neighborhood adjacent to Rutgers will provide volunteers the opportunity to assist neighborhood cleanup, community event promotional flyering, and historical walkthrough to describe the history and evolution of this neighborhood since it was incorporated in 1899
