In partnership with the City of Camden, Camden City School District and Cooper University Health Care, Center For Family Services recently held a Community Health Fair. This free public event offered a great opportunity for families to receive information that will be beneficial towards leading healthier lives.

Among the wide variety of activities featured at the health fair were health & wellness education and physical fitness demonstrations. As the City of Camden and its partners move forth in improving health and wellness in the community, it is important that residents become mindful of their food/beverage consumption and their daily habits. Healthy snack and refreshments were even distributed so that residents could familiarize themselves with certain foods that will allow them to improve their nutrition.

The demonstrations helped to promote physical activity amongst Camden youth. While participating in recreational activities will reduce the chances of suffering from childhood obesity, studies indicate that regular exercise also has a positive impact on the cognitive development of youth. With increased knowledge and access to health-related information and activities, residents will be able to modify their health practices, therefore becoming less susceptible to chronic health issues that often come as a result of poor diet and behaviors.

The health fair also offered free health screenings, an opportunity of which many of Camden’s student-athletes took advantage. The free comprehensive screenings included assessments by cardiology, pulmonary, orthopedic, and concussion experts. In addition to the physical screenings, student-athletes were also given relevant materials that will encourage them to maintain healthy lifestyles as they continue to pursue their athletic endeavors.

It is a goal of the City of Camden and partnering organizations to promote healthy behaviors and educate members of the community. For those hoping to take on a healthier lifestyle, the Community Health Fair was not the only chance to do so. Center For Family Services, Cooper University Health Care, and other committed collaborators throughout Camden encourage residents to utilize the many resources and services that they offer in order to strengthen and empower the family unit.
