Before beginning a job search, it’s important to assess your readiness for employment. Recovery is a personal journey, and the timing of returning to work can look different for everyone. It may come sooner than anticipated or it may be something a little further out of reach for some. Both are okay. Consider whether you feel prepared to manage the responsibilities and structure of a work schedule while maintaining your recovery priorities. Many people find it helpful to discuss this step with a counselor, sponsor, or career counseling professional who understands addiction recovery and vocational rehabilitation.
Ask yourself questions such as:
- Do I have recovery support systems in place?
- Can I manage workplace stress while protecting my sobriety?
- What type of work environment will support my work-life balance?
Taking time to reflect can help you identify the type of job and schedule that will best support both your recovery and long-term career goals.
If you’ve been away from the workforce for a period of time, resume building is going to be a crucial component when applying to roles regardless of their setting or field of work a resume is likely going to be required. Again, the ReWork program houses the skilled staff to help you create your updated resume so you can feel confident when the time comes to apply.
