Summer always seems to fly by, and before we know it, a new school year is just around the corner. Many of us have memories of going to pick out a brand-new backpack for school. But for many families, the start of a new school year is a stressful time. As schools require longer supply lists and the cost of everyday essentials continues to climb, preparing for the first day of school has become increasingly expensive. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that costs for school supplies were 9% higher in 2025 that the year before, and many families expect cost to higher again this year. 

To help ease the stress for families this upcoming school year, Center for Family Services’ Project Backpack is working to meet the needs of families in our community to provide children the necessary tools to achieve school success from the first day of school to high school graduation.

As back-to-school expenses increase, they also create greater disparities between students. When families are forced to choose between paying for basic household needs and purchasing school supplies, children may start the school year without the tools they need to fully participate in the classroom. This can impact their confidence, sense of belonging, and overall readiness to learn. 

While school supplies can seem secondary to a child's education, being prepared has a significant impact on a student's ability to engage in learning. Prepared students participate more. Providing the needed supplies at the start of the school year reduces stress and feelings of being different, allowing children to focus on learning instead of worrying about what they don't have.
