Recovery is REAL: Honoring National Recovery Month
September is National Recovery Month. This is a time to raise awareness about substance use treatment and recovery, celebrate the achievements of those in recovery, and highlight the support systems that make recovery possible.
This year’s theme, Recovery is REAL – Restoring Every Aspect of Life, reminds us that recovery is not only about overcoming addiction—it’s about healing physically, emotionally, and socially, and creating a healthier, more hopeful future. This theme especially touches on the point of hope. Understanding that there is hope for an individual struggling, hope to restore family dynamics, and hope to find compassion for those struggling.
Recovery is a journey, and no two paths look the same. For so many people, taking the first step toward treatment can feel overwhelming. Stigma, fear, and uncertainty often stand in the way. The fear of something that they may have been keeping a secret, finally being out there for all to know, or the fear of a reality that they tried to keep away from the surface, finally coming to light, often holds people back from taking these steps towards recovery. That’s why support from loved ones and the community is so essential. When someone is considering treatment, encouragement and compassion can make all the difference.
Here are some ways to be supportive of someone thinking about seeking help:
Listen without judgment. Create a safe space where they feel heard and understood.
Offer encouragement. Remind them that recovery is possible and that seeking treatment is a courageous and positive step.
Share resources. Help connect them to treatment options and support services so they know they are not alone.
Be patient. Recovery is a process, and it often begins with small steps forward. Your ongoing support matters.
