Preschool is a family and child’s first introduction to the back-to-school routine. It is and exciting phase in a family’s next stage but can bring some first time worries and questions. While everyone has their own ways of preparing and routines that work for their dynamics, here are some general tips that can help make the transition to schooling smoother for everyone.

Mosaic Early Learning is ready to welcome children into this milestone. Through a curriculum and facilities designed to put children on their first step of early education, children can begin their first day of school with confidence. Pre-school is an important first step to guide children in their developing academic, social, and emotional skills.

Here are some tips that focus on different parts of back-to-school to help orient both parents and children starting pre-school. Just as pre-school looks to focus on varied social, emotional, and academic development, families should expect to prepare in varied practical aspects.

Get the Conversation Started

One of the first and most important things for a family to start preparing is gradually introducing and sharing with children the news that they will be beginning school and what it all entails. Let your child know the why and how of pre-school and who they’ll be interacting with every day. You can share your early school memories and pictures to let them know it’s a universal experience you share with them.

Beat the Morning Rush

Start practicing bedtime and waking up early before the first day. You can make it fun by preparing a nice breakfast and outfit before heading out the door. A consistent morning routine can help children know what to expect and give everyone more time to get ready without feeling rushed.

It’s helpful for parents to practice getting out of the house too. You can use this time to see what works in the morning and what doesn’t, identify the best route, and visit the center if possible.

Build Independence

Getting ahead of everyday skills that children will use at school can be a big help in sending them prepared for their first day. Skills such as washing their hands, potty training, carrying their backpack, putting on their shoes, and holding stationary are a good place to start. Building these skills can help children feel more confident and independent in their new environment.

Prepare for Drop-Off and Separation Anxiety

Drop-offs may be difficult at first. It is advised to have a clear and consistent goodbye routine to let your child know that you’ll be back and that they can trust their teachers while you’re away. If permitted by the school, bringing a small comfort object from home can also help your child feel grounded.

Remember that separation anxiety can be a normal part of starting preschool. With patience and reassurance, children can gradually become more comfortable with their new routine.
