Supporting a Loved One with Addiction: Hope and Help for New Jersey Families
When someone you love struggles with substance use, you don't have to face it alone. Center for Family Services' ReConnections program offers free support, education, and resources to help New Jersey families find hope and move forward.
One of the most common things we hear from families after they've connected with our ReConnections program at Center for Family Services is: "I wish I had known about this sooner."
When someone you love is experiencing challenges related to substance use, it can be difficult to know where to turn. You may feel overwhelmed, uncertain, or like you've tried everything. Whether you're just beginning to ask questions or have been navigating this journey for years, one thing is true: you do not have to face it alone.
At Center for Family Services, we believe families deserve support, too. Through our ReConnections program, we provide free, compassionate support to family members and friends affected by a loved one's substance use, helping them find hope, build healthier relationships, and access practical tools for navigating the challenges of addiction.
Free Addiction Support for New Jersey Families
Every family's experience with substance use is different. That's why ReConnections takes an individualized approach to supporting families and loved ones.
Our grant-funded program offers education, peer support, case management, and evidence-based resources designed to help families navigate the emotional and practical challenges of a loved one's substance use.
You do not have to wait for your loved one to seek treatment to get help for yourself.
Your loved one does not need to be in treatment or even recognize that they need help for you to receive support. All ReConnections services are provided at no cost through state grant funding.
Our Family Support Specialists have lived experience and understand firsthand the challenges families can face. When appropriate, they draw from their own experiences to offer hope, understanding, and practical encouragement.
Families often tell us there is comfort in speaking with someone who truly understands, not just through training, but through lived experience. Our role is not to tell families what to do. Instead, we walk alongside them, offering compassionate peer support, evidence-based tools, and the reassurance that they do not have to navigate this journey alone.
Helping Families Build Healthier Relationships Through CRAFT
One of the evidence-based approaches used by ReConnections is Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT), developed by Dr. Robert Meyers.
CRAFT helps family members develop practical skills to:
- Strengthen communication with their loved ones.
- Establish and maintain healthy boundaries.
- Reduce conflict and improve family relationships.
- Encourage positive behavioral changes and treatment engagement.
- Prioritize their own emotional health and well-being.
Research has demonstrated that CRAFT can be an effective approach for helping families encourage loved ones to engage in treatment, while also improving their own well-being.
One program participant shared:
"This program has changed my life. It has provided me with the tools to communicate with my loved one in healthier ways, and the CRAFT techniques really work."
For many families, learning new ways to communicate and respond to challenging situations can be an important step toward rebuilding hope.
Finding Connection Through Family Support Groups and Resources
Healing doesn't happen only during appointments.
Families often tell us how meaningful it is to connect with others who truly understand what they're experiencing. Having a safe, welcoming environment to share experiences, ask questions, and learn from others can help reduce feelings of isolation.
Through ReConnections, families can participate in support groups, wellness activities, book clubs, self-care events, and educational workshops.
These opportunities help families build connections, strengthen their support networks, and recognize that caring for themselves is an important part of supporting someone they love.
Taking the First Step Toward Support
Reaching out for help can feel overwhelming, especially when you're unsure what to expect.
At ReConnections, your first conversation is simply that: a conversation.
Our team will listen to your story, answer your questions, and begin exploring what support might look like for you and your family.
Services are designed to be flexible and accessible, with options for in-person, telephone, and telehealth support. Educational materials can be mailed directly to families, and transportation assistance is available when needed.
Our team also offers after-hours, weekend, and holiday on-call support, as well as bilingual services for Spanish-speaking families, helping ensure that families can access compassionate, culturally responsive care.
A member of our team will connect with you within 24 to 48 hours of your initial outreach.
You Don't Have to Navigate Addiction Alone
Families often discover something they wish they had known sooner: support isn't only available for their loved one. It's available for them, too.
You don't have to wait until things get worse. You don't have to wait until your loved one is ready for treatment. And you don't have to have all the answers before asking for help.
Sometimes hope begins with one conversation.
If you or someone you know is navigating the challenges of a loved one's substance use, Center for Family Services' ReConnections program is here to help.
