National Self-Care Awareness Month: Taking Time to Care for Yourself

Between work, family, responsibilities and everything else that fills our days, it can be easy to put ourselves last. September is National Self-Care Awareness Month, a time to pause and recognize the importance of caring for our physical, mental and emotional well-being.

Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be as simple as taking a walk, getting enough sleep, spending time with people who support you, enjoying a favorite hobby or taking a few quiet minutes to recharge. Small, everyday habits can make a meaningful difference in how we feel and how we handle life’s challenges.

Consider finding small ways to practice self-care throughout your day. Take a short walk or stretch during the workday, stay hydrated, take a break from screens, make time for something you enjoy or connect with a friend, family member or coworker.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, give yourself permission to pause. This is something that everyone needs to be reminded of and when this is overlooked or skipped until next time that is when a cycle of self-neglect can begin and your own wellness can find itself truly on the back burner. Try taking a few slow, deep breaths, stepping away from your task for a few minutes or simply giving yourself some grace.

Self-care also means recognizing when you may need additional support. If you’ve been thinking that your mental or emotional well-being could use some attention, you don’t have to navigate it alone. Center For Family Services offers counseling and behavioral health services for adults, children, teens and families, with support for areas including mental health, relationships, everyday well-being, addiction and recovery, trauma and grief.
