Life Skills Counselor

Summary:  

Center for Family Services is seeking a motivated and compassionate individual for the Life Skills Counselor position within the Together Youth Shelter Program.  Together is a short-term, walk-in shelter, providing 24-hour emergency shelter for runaway, homeless, and neglected youth age 9-18. Together is a caring and healing home for children where they receive support and work on their future with the goal of family reunification. Some of the services Together provides include food, clothing, and medical services, individual, group, parent, and family counseling, advocacy, life skills training, and educational and tutoring services. The Life Skills Counselor is a key member of the program’s team and monitors and performs individualized life skills instruction, provides direct counseling services, and performs case management for youth assigned to caseload.

 Duties and Responsibilities:

The Life Skills Counselor coordinates and provides individual and group living skills assessment and training for all shelter residents, designs a treatment plan for each youth assigned to caseload, develops and implements a rotating schedule of group instruction in the field of living skills for shelter residents, oversees and provides feedback to all treatment plans in the area of life skills, and performs other crisis intervention, counseling and youth supervision as necessary to meet 24-hour operational activities of the program. This individual completes progress notes, documentation and other reporting requirements as needed, meets regularly with supervisor, and attends training as needed.  The Life Skills Counselor completes a Monthly Recreation Calendar, Quarterly Report Data, and Life Skills Objective Form.

Requirements: 
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, degree in a human services field preferred
  • Must have at least two years’ experience working with youth
  • Experience working in a residential setting preferred
  • Must be available nights, weekends, and holidays with on-call responsibilities
  • Excellent driving skills and current driver's license with a driving record of at least three years
  • Vehicle with current insurance and registration
