VINELAND- Asia Garcia was 17 when the abuse her mother had been suffering at the hands of a spouse was turned against her. "He broke my nose," said Garcia, now 23, a student at Cumberland County College, where she is member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. "Thankfully, it's healed now," she added with a smile and a laugh.
Now, Garcia is helping other survivors of domestic violence and sexual assualt through volunteering with the honor society's new formed Cumberland Cares initiative, which opened its campaign to bring further awareness to these issues on Wednesday with a pair of speakers as well as a candle light vigil.
