CAMDEN- The Verizon Foundation awarded Center For Family Services, a Camden based human services non-profit, with a $7,500 Domestic Violence Solution grant. The end result of this generous contribution will be a teen dating violence awareness video.
This initiative will be spearheaded by two of Center For Family Services programs. SERV (Services Empowering Rights of Victims), a sexual and domestic violence prevention and counseling program and Quixote Quest, a teen volunteer program, will work together over the course of a year to educate and prevent domestic violence in teen relationships.
With approximately 20% of female high school students in the US report being sexually or physically abused by a dating partner, and 40% of teenage girls say that they know someone their age who has been abused by a dating partner, this is an imperative time in a teens life to learn about the dangers of domestic violence.
Quixote Quest volunteers will be educated on domestic violence by SERV, and in turn, will use this knowledge to create a video that will speak to their peers about intimate partner violence in their own language. Once the video is complete, QQ teens will accompany SERV staff to shelters and make presentations to youth about domestic violence, how to prevent it and how to get help if you have been a victim.
“CFS recognizes that adults speaking to teens about violence often has little impact because the language is outdated and in a string of other "do's and don'ts", says Richard Stagliano, President/CEO of Center For Family Service. “With this approach, teens educate other teens on how to prevent domestic violence and who to turn to in a time of need”.
This is just one of many ways Center For Family Services continues to bring education and prevention resources to the public.
