Supporting Seniors

Living alone and almost penniless, Camden County resident, Helen, had given up. The 68 year old had recently lost her mother and at the same time, lost her will to live. She stopped opening mail, visiting doctors, and communicating with the outside world. She was on the verge of homelessness when Center For Family Services’ SAFE (Services to Assist Families and the Elderly) program stepped in.

It took nearly four months of persistent calls and visits for Helen to open up her door to SAFE. By that time, she had only $600 to her name and her health was deteriorating. Slowly, she gained trust in SAFE staff, allowing them to help her apply for benefits, set up doctor’s appointments, and eventually coordinate affordable senior housing. Staff worked tirelessly to help Helen regain a safe and healthy lifestyle.

SAFE is still working with Helen. Most of her physical problems have stabilized, her bills are up to date, and she has a new, more positive outlook on life since moving into her new apartment.
