Project COPE
There are more than 28,000 "at-risk" children in the city of Camden. Some may have one or more parents who are incarcerated. Effective intervention is necessary to help these children follow a safe path toward a successful future. Project C.O.P.E. (Children Obtaining a Positive Environment) is a mentoring program designed to empower youth in our community who have an incarcerated parent.
Studies show that children involved with mentoring programs are less likely to begin using illegal drugs, consume alcohol, skip school or engage in acts of violence. By being a positive role model, mentors can help a child recognize that safe and healty choices lead to positive futures. Mentors can make all the difference in the life of a child.
Mentor volunteers are needed to work with children ages 4 to 18. Become a mentor with Project C.O.P.E. and support, guide, or simply be a friend to a young person for a period of at least one year. Just one hour a week is all it takes.
Mentors must be at least 18 years of age, and high school graduate, and reside in the Delaware Valley area. Mentors who have access to an automobile must show proof of insurance and have a good driving record.
Mentors can help a child:
- develop higher levels of self-esteem
- achieve greater academic ability
- improve behavioral and social relations
- grow into strong, confident adults.
Project COPE is sponsored by the Diocese of Camden and Order of Malta.
