Ways to Volunteer

We value the participation of volunteers! There are many ways to get involved and we hope you will be able to participate in some way.

During the School Day:·

  • Be a Play Partner: Put together puzzles, assist with art projects, etc.·
  • Be a Reader: Read books to individuals or small groups of children and engage the children in discussions about the story·
  • Be a Song Leader: Teach songs to groups of children. Songs are a way for children to begin understanding how words and phrases work
  • Be a Field Trip Assistant: Help the staff ensure adequate supervision and safety of the children during field trips.
  •  Be a Bulletin Board Creator: Maintain curriculum-related themes on a specific bulletin board in the classroom
  • Be a Photographer: Take pictures of children, class events, and community scenes for posting in the classroom to use as a basis for creating literature.
  • Be a Cook Assistant: Assist the cooking staff with meal preparation and serving preparation.
  • Be a Meal Time Assistant: Help with hand washing, standing in line, sit and talk with children during meals, model good table manners, and assist with clean up after meals
  • Be a Classroom Assistant: Assist teaching staff in daily classroom operations (playground checks, stocking materials, circle time, etc.)
  • Be an Office Assistant: Help office staff answering phones or other clerical duties

Other Times:

  • Be an Art Helper: Make games, posters, signs, or flyers for classrooms.
  • Be a Carpenter: Repair damaged toys, shelves, or other equipment
  • Be a Copyist: Transpose songs, rhymes, and children’s book onto large chart paper so large groups of children can read them at once
  • Be a Classroom Assistant: Wash sheets, blankets or other classroom items
  • Be a Participant: Attend parent meetings, trainings, or workshops that Head Start provides, and participate in Policy Council

These are just a few suggestions. If you would like to volunteer in another way that is not mentioned
feel free to discuss it with your child’s teacher or a Family Service Advocate.
